Dear Prime Minister:

On behalf of the members of the CAW-Canada, I write to support your decision to introduce legislation to legalize marriage between same-sex couples. We ask that you move swiftly in introducing this legislation.

Although there has been controversy over this issue, three Courts have now clearly stated that the exclusion of gays, lesbians and bisexuals from marriage offends their Charter rights. Given these Court decisions, it seems unnecessary to refer the legislation to the Supreme Court of Canada. This move will only serve to create delay and uncertainty for the couples now marrying.

The decision not to appeal the recent Ontario Court of Appeal ruling and instead to introduce legislation shows the leadership necessary on this issue. We ask that you avoid undermining this bold move with the delay of a reference.

Yours truly,
Buzz Hargrove
