Letter from Buzz Hargrove

To: CAW Local Union Presidents and Recording Secretaries

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

RE: Prevent Cancer Campaign

Anyone who attended the recent CAW Council meeting on December 5 th knows how riveting the video 'Before Their Time' on occupational cancer was. The video shows workers who have contracted cancer as a result of their work such as Bell Canada operators who contracted breast cancer and Brother Bud Jimmerfield, President of CAW Local 89, who contracted cancer as a result of exposure to metalworking fluids. This video will be sent to all Local Unions in the New Year so that you can show it to your membership. We must act to prevent more of these shocking diseases and deaths. Delegates to Council endorsed the 'CAW Prevent Cancer Campaign' which will begin in January.

In order to ensure that all Local Union:

  • Health and safety representatives
  • Workers' compensation representatives
  • Environment representatives

have access to the CAW Prevent Cancer Campaign kits, we need their names, addresses, local union, unit name, telephone and fax numbers, and email addresses.

We would like to make sure that we know the names of your Local Union's official representatives so that they conduct the campaign with the full authority and support from the Local Union. We know that for amalgamated locals with a number of different workplaces there will be union health and safety representatives in each workplace. Please ensure we have at least one name for each workplace.

Please find enclosed a form which we ask you to photocopy and fill in for each of your local union representatives in these three areas. Please return by January 31, 1998.

In solidarity,

President, CAW-Canada
