Every year thousands of working people choose to join the CAW. For many, it's because they realize that by joining a union they will bring positive change to their workplace. Through unions, workers have the legal right to bargain collectively with their employer, which can help establish a climate of a greater respect and dignity. Joining the CAW means rebalancing power relationships at your workplace - it means never standing alone.
Today, 4.5 million Canadians belong to unions. Statistics show that unionized workers do far better than their non-union counterparts. Individually, workers are at their employer's whim. Collectively workers enjoy greater rights and have a real opportunity to make life better for themselves and their family.
It takes courage for workers to join a union. Employers use all kind of tactics to try and persuade employees to stay non-unionized, including fear and intimidation. Despite this opposition, unions continue to grow in Canada and are as useful today as they've ever been.
