Water
Just over 1 percent of the CAW's membership (around 2,600 members) works in the water transportation industry. This includes a fascinating range of occupations in this often overlooked segment of our overall transportation network. After all, Canada is a major costal power, but politicians, the media and the public at large often take our marine transportation sector for granted.
Over half of the CAW members in this sector work in passenger ferry services (including Marine Atlantic, Northumberland Ferries and Bay Ferries).
Many of the rest of our members in this sector work in the marine freight shipping business. This includes mariners who work on Great Lakes shipping vessels, and well as the workers who operate the St. Lawrence Seaway system.
The remainder of the CAW's members in water transportation work for the Coast Guard, as communications and radio specialists.
