Specialty Vehicles
The specialty vehicles sector of our union has been hammered by the onset of the latest recession. The closure of facilities like Freightliner Trucks in St. Thomas and John Deere in Welland, have devastated those entire communities. However, there are still around 7,000 CAW members remaining in the specialty vehicles sector, representing over 3 percent of our total membership.
Our specialty vehicles sector includes several sub-sectors. Heavy truck production includes Navistar and Paccar. We represent the workers at several plants producing buses, including New Flyer, Nova, Prevost and Orion. CAW members at Bombardier and Electromotive manufacture railway and subway equipment. Finally, we also represent workers at some specialized vehicle and machinery facilities (such as General Dynamics and Hitachi).
