Shipbuilding
The CAW represents approximately 1,500 shipyard workers, mostly along Canada's East Coast. The two largest CAW employers in this sector are the shipyards in Halifax and Marystown. Recently, the CAW met with the federal government to push for comprehensive and viable options for a long-term, sustainable Canadian shipbuilding strategy. Fleet renewal plans could see the Government invest in excess of $40 billion to build more than 50 large vessels over the next 30 years. This would potentially expand work at the Halifax and Marystown shipyards. Currently, many of our shipyards are running well under capacity, leaving many of our members in this sector out of work.
Shipbuilding workers joined the CAW in 1996 through a merger with the Marine Workers Federation.
