Extendicare took over our company in January 2012. We were a family run home for 47 years and if there were any problems the owners were very good at helping anyway they could.  Once Extendicare took over, we all got nervous at first with the change but tried to stay positive and hope it would run properly.  Within no time they started cutting hours from full time employees because we had a spell of deaths which left 5 or 6 empty beds at one time.  Obviously we didn't find this right since the beds get full again very quickly.
This affected me since they took 4 of my shifts away.  I called employment standards to ask if they were able to do this and they said they could do whatever they want.  It doesn't seem to matter that you need to keep 60 hours to keep your benefits going (mine would have been compromised as a result of losing shifts).
Everyday people at work were complaining more and more about how all the changes were negative and the whole morale of the staff was very low.  Since I was affected I finally thought we had enough.  We needed to voice our opinions and change things for the better before people started quitting or the job was not getting done properly due to everyone's poor morale.
That's why we called the CAW!
We appreciate all the CAW has done for us already and are eager to get started with bargaining our first collective agreement!

We wanted to join a union because we wanted to have fair wages like the other two companies that run out of Cami, and we wanted to make sure we were treated with respect and like human beings, not just a number and not just ruled with an iron fist. Overtime pay was also important because it's the law. We are glad to be part of the CAW now and we look forward to showing our company that we are a great group of drivers who are dedicated to our work and want to keep the business growing.

Northstar Aerospace Windsor is located in the town of Lakeshore in Essex County.  The plant has been in existence for over thirty years and never had a union representation.  We contacted the CAW in 2010 and started talking about the benefits of belonging to a union.
Joining the CAW has been a good decision for our futures here given we never had the ability to challenge any management decisions or to have a voice in any of our working conditions.  We voted on and accepted our very first collective agreement by 76% on June 1st, 2011.
The workers at Northstar Aerospace are proud to be a part of the CAW.  This is a historical time for our small but one of a kind plant in Lakeshore and with the support and knowledge of the CAW, anything is possible.

We felt it would be to the benefit of the workers in our garage to seek CAW representation. Some of our reasons were that the company policies and health care benefits would constantly change without consulting workers and not all employees were being treated equally (favouritism was common).

Since voting in the CAW and negotiating our first collective agreement I have noticed a distnct difference in the way the membership is treated by management.  There is new feeling of respect and security.  There is a new team spirit within our group.  It makes for a much happier workplace.

We joined the CAW because we knew it was in the best interests of all our co-workers.  It was important not to be scared because we have rights in Canada and it was our right to join a union.  There will always be those who are experiencing struggles like you are, but the CAW gave us so much support to be determined and in the end, we were successful.  We have made the best achievement possible by joining the CAW.
