Bill Mahoney
USW local 1005 Retiree

"They stormed across the border and proudly raised their flag. We now own your steel mill, they so liked to brag. They want to cut our pensions, our benefits, and our pay. Now they own out steel mill, they want things their own way. They said that buying Stelco would be our country's gain but all they have brought to Canada is misery and pain."

Rolf Gerstenberger
USW Local 1005 President

" We are gathered here for this day of action to defend and affirm our rights. In the modern world people have rights by virtue of being human. All governments and those who employ humans must recognize those rights and guarantee them. They include a right to a livelihood and security in retirement because we are the producers of all the wealth in this society"

Sid Ryan
Ontario Federation of Labour President

"We want to say in particular to Stephen Harper that we'll be damned in this country that we'd stand by and allow 9,000 pensioners to have their pension robbed from right underneath their nose."

Joel Smith
CAW Local 222

"When we had our strike over our pension and defined benefits in Saint Mary's Cement. Local 1005 from Hamilton always stood shoulder to shoulder with Local 222 so we are just here to do the same thing for them."

Leo Gerard
USW President

"I'm wearing a 1005 jacket. I'm the president of an international union, but I'm a Canadian, a proud Canadian and I'll be damned if they'll take away our pension; damned if they'll take away the rights of our kids; damned if they will take away the rest for our grandkids, damned if they will set us back!"

Jack Layton
Federal NDP Leader

"What we need is Stephen Harper to support the NDP laws that are designed to protect people's pensions because they belong to you. Let's stop the theft, let's get back on track with jobs, that's what we need in this country."

Dean Warner
CAW Local 504

"The fight for our benefits, for our pensions is a half a century old and it is being eroded in a matter of a couple of years. If people don't stand up now, the homeless that you see on the street will triple in the next year. People have to stand up and say "enough is enough" and get a government in power that is actually going to help working people for a change."
