TAGS Adrift Action Needed
Four years ago the Federal government guaranteed East coast fishers that the economic assistance from the TAGS program to replace the lost income from the ban on cod fishing would run until 1999. Now the federal Department of Fisheries is abandoning the fishers in eastern Canada.

Peter Stouffer
NDP MP Sackville-Eastern Shore
"They are telling us that it will end in August, but they are also forgetting that on May the 8th 2,700 Newfoundlanders and 300 Nova Scotianers and New Brunswickers will be off TAGS. There is no other program for them by the government and it appears to us that they are going to down their responsibility to the provinces and put the people on welfare, and social assistance."

Two unanimous reports from the all-party standing Committee of Fisheries and Oceans has called for action, but they have been ignored by the bureaucrats.

Peter Stouffer
NDP MP Sackville-Eastern Shore
"I have a feeling that they really don't know what to do. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is the most out of control department in the House of Commons. That's why I have been asking for a judicial inquiry into the practices and policies of the vehicle because it has completely run amuck. They don't have a clue of what to do. Everything is reactive, reactive instead of being proactive, and all they have to do is sit down and listen to those people affected in the industry and they will come up with the recommendation and solutions for a long-term viability of the resource and to sustain their communities.

Stouffer, a CAW member who is on a leave of absence since his election to the House of Commons, asked CAW members to pressure their local MP's, to make the government overhaul the Fisheries Department and help the fishers on both the East and West coasts.
