Mandela and the Children
Toronto, ON

Children played a key role in announcing the Mandela and The Children event to be held at the SkyDome in Toronto September 25th. Forty thousand school children from across Canada will get to hear South African President Nelson Mandela in person and millions more across the country will be able to watch the program live on CBC Kiely Lewis, representing the school children welcomed the news that Mandela was coming to Canada

Keily Lewis
Toronto student spokesperson
"President Mandela is an advocate of children's rights. His commitment is the light at the end of the tunnel for children like myself who have been exploited in some way. I am proud to see the children in Toronto welcome President Mandela to our city."

The purpose of the Mandela and the Children event is twofold according to South African High Commissioner Billy Modise.

Billy Modise
South African High Commissioner
"We are launching the Canadian Friends of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. The launch on the 25th of September will be graced by the presence of President Mandela himself. That day is only for two people, President Mandela and the children."

Reflecting the unity symbolized by President Mandela, the Mandela and the Children event has gained support from all parts of society, including the CAW, one of the four main sponsors.

Buzz Hargrove
CAW National President
"Some of them are unusual partners for me. With the Ontario Government, we've had a bit of an up and down relationship. The Royal Bank of Canada. We've had a long, long relationship with them. They hold my mortgage. And a lot of other people who are committed to bringing about change."

Hargrove added that President Mandela is an example for not only children but also for the rest of the world to follow.

Buzz Hargrove
CAW National President
"I believe, in a world today that is lacking in political leadership with real true values and morals, that Nelson Mandela is a light that we can all look forward to. We look forward to making a contribution to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. We know what it represents, we know what it means, therefore we are extremely proud to be part of it."

The CAW has been helping the fight against Apartheid for over two decades.

CAW "Fighting Back Makes a Difference."
