CAW members build not only cars, they also play a key role in building communities. Each year the 215 thousand members of the CAW rally behind the United Way campaign.

Jim O'Neil CAW National
Secretary-Treasurer .
"It really means a lot to working people, not only those that belong to our union that have had to use United Way agencies, but to those who are less fortunate that don't have jobs, or good paying jobs. It really is something that we can do to put back into the community. It's what our union is all about, helping others, if we can help them let's help them

.

Over the years the CAW has provided both dollars and leadership for the United Way.

"Some of our cities that have been very successful-- the cities of Windsor, Oshawa, London, Cambridge, Winnipeg in Manitoba-- the United Way has been co-chaired by somebody from the CAW. The majority of the monies that come into some of those cities is because the CAW pushes it, talks to our members and convinces them that this is a good thing and it has put them over the top every time.

While the exact amount contributed to the United Way by CAW members is not known Jim O'Neil estimates it is over ten million dollars.

"I only use that because in the city of Windsor in the 1997 United Way CAW members committed out of the eight million collected, five million just in the city of Windsor. Our Ford local on a per capita basis, it was the highest giving membership. And Windsor again reached the top as they have done year after year. Windsor leads the way in the United Way of Canada every year on a per capita basis so there is no question our members understand the importance of it."

O'Neil is confident that the members will continue their support of the United Way Campaign.

Jim O'Neil CAW National
Secretary-Treasurer .
"I would ask our members to look at the communities they live in, think about the people that are less fortunate than them and just dig into their pockets and help out as CAW members do everyday."
