The Eva's Phoenix shelter for homeless youth in Toronto is the example of what the federal government should be looking at instead of bragging about the amount of money they are going to spend in building more jails, according to CAW National President Buzz Hargrove.

"What a difference it would make to our society if they had concentrated on that money going into this kind of operation, and reaching out to young people and getting them off the street into an environment where they have support and where people recognize that they are struggling and that all they need is some support to get through some difficult periods in their life."

Hargrove made the remarks during a cheque presentation at Eva's Phoenix June 9th, 2006 by Aubrey Brown, vice president of Shoppers Drug Mart to the Buzz Hargrove Fund.

"You all know that Buzz Hargrove is not a guy who says, raise the money but forget where I am. He's a guy who is going to be on the site with young people and that is to me the strength of the Buzz Hargrove's of the world."
"Buzz, I'm happy to present to Eva's initiative for the homeless youth in Toronto a cheque for $100,000 from Shopper's Drug Mart and it is from our heart just like everything else that you do is from your heart."

The Eva's Phoenix complex provides residential units for homeless youth along with guidance and training. Some of the youth are being trained at the complex's print shop, which helps generate on going funding by doing commercial printing for the public. Hargrove said the Eva's Phoenix's operation should be copied across the country.

"There are so many young people at risk, youth at risk and I believe if we had more Eva's Initiative and Eva's Phoenix in other locations around our city and country that we would have a lot less shootings, we'd have a lot less need for jails."

CAW was instrumental in founding Eva's Phoenix in 2000 as its millennium project.
