CAW Local 252 members at Debro Steel in Brampton, Ontario are on strike fighting company demands for concessions.
The CAW represents 56 workers at the plant, which cuts steel plates and steel beams for the construction and manufacturing industries. The workers went on strike November 22.
The company has a series of concession demands on the table including the phase out of the current sick day plan, changes to the overtime language that would end overtime pay after eight hours to after 40 hours in a week. In addition any new employees hired would be paid at a much, much lower rate, said CAW national representative Sukhvinder Johl. Wages also remain an issue, he said.
Unit chairperson Gord Mertz said the membership is standing together and showing tremendous solidarity in the fight to defeat these concession demands.
"These are tough economic times and our membership is determined to win a fair and just agreement from this employer," said Mertz.
