Settlement at Sheraton Vancouver

With 133 workers on the brink of a strike deadline, CAW Local 3000 membership at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford recently settled a new collective agreement with a 94% ratification vote.
Improvements include reduced workload for room attendants, language to ensure increased time off the job for senior workers and a 5% wage increase over the life of this three-year collective agreement.
"This sector is feeling the impact of low tourism and business travel", says Mike Byrne CAW National Representative. "But the strength of the bargaining unit led by Jean Van Vliet, President of Local 3000, ensured a great pattern for all CAW hotels which are heading into bargaining."
Van Vliet emphasized that " a strike threat timed to the upcoming banquets, including a Liberal Party fund raising event, along with the strong strike mandate and support of our membership forced a break in the stalemate at all our hotel bargaining. The Sheraton bargaining committee was very strong and knew they had the full support of their membership," Van Vliet said.
