20 Days/20 Ways to Stop Violence Against Women
Every year on December 6th, women and men across the country commemorate the fourteen women who were murdered at École Polytechnique University in Montreal. We also recognize and remember all women who have died as a result of gender based violence.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of that tragic event that propelled the issue of gender based violence from a private issue to a public issue demanding societal change.
The CAW working with the CLC and its affiliate unions are asking people to send Prime Minister Stephen Harper a postcard each day for 20 days between November 16th and December 6th. The cards urge him to keep the gun registry, and also contain messages asking that Canada improve the lives of women by: improving the funding of shelters for women and children; investing in new social housing; setting a national standard for welfare rates; providing equal pay for work of equal value; and improving services, including a nationally-funded child care program, better public pensions, and access to employment insurance.
The CAW has distributed over 26,000 packages of postcards to our members across the country for events, forums and vigils. The postcard campaign is also now available on the CAW website.
Beginning on Monday, November 16th please take a minute to send a postcard to the Prime Minister each day leading up to December 6th.

Free trade with the European Union is a bad idea for Canada
The Harper government's relentless push to sign a new Canada-EU free trade deal would undermine the rights of federal, provincial and municipal governments to manage public spending over goods and services; it would privatize public services like drinking water, prevent us from adopting strong measures to combat climate change and wipe out up to 150,000 Canadian jobs, among a long list of additional concerns. CAW President Ken Lewenza says:
So far, all signs point to a free trade deal that is lopsided, unfair and would do more harm than good to Canadians.
