CAW Local 636 20 year employee

"We're out here for severance pay and that. I think we all realize that this is the end. It's been in the works for a couple years. We just want what's fair to us in our years of service."

Barb Bourgoin
CAW Local 636 23 year employee

"We've all got a lot of years of service in this facility and we feel we are owed that. We've done everything we have for Meridian, help cut costs, and we feel that our years of service should be due to us."

Sean Boyington
CAW Local 636 8.5 year employee

"I think it sucks. I've got five young kids at home under ten. Like, what do I do for them?"

Cindy Sanders
CAW Local 636 23 year employee

"The government, they should be stepping in and changing some of the laws so that when companies do go down like this, that they take care of their workers first and they can't move their equipment until everything's settled."

Ross Gerrie
Pres. CAW Local 636

"We're down 20-25 people. Ninety on the seniority list and uh, just a travesty of what they're doing, they're making this into a guided bankruptcy where the workers are going to end up with nothing."

Steve Farkas
CAW Area Director

"Meridian as a corporation is breaking up their businesses. They've sold some to Magna. They're in the process of doing a deal with Flexingate. This is the only Canadian facility; it is not part of the current deals that have been done with Magna or part of the consideration of the Flexingate package. So at the end of the day, it's clear, that what will happen is the company will be become insolvent, there will be a bankruptcy and then our members will be left out in the cold, with respect to any monies that are owing to them, via severance pay or termination pays or anything like that."

Ross Gerrie
Pres. CAW Local 636

"The crux of the problem is that the provincial or the governments of Canada have not ensured that workers are looked after, when we get into situations like this. They haven't provided legislation that provides proper severance. Proper protection for wage. Proper protection for vacation pay or any other thing else that is included that people lose when situations like this happen. They should step up to the plate and ensure that workers are the first ones at the pump and that their money is guaranteed."

Steve Farkas
CAW Area Director

"On Monday of this week Xerox, which is a major customer, actually 80% of the product in this plant goes to Xerox, came into the plant Monday. On Tuesday they came back with riggers and outside contractors to start to disassemble their equipment inside the plant. That's when our members took a stand and put a stop to it. We immediately then called other CAW locals in the area, as far away as Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph, Hamilton, Ingersol who immediately responded in a solidarity picket. And they're back here again today. The trailers behind us are trailers with product that they're trying to get out of the plant for Xerox, and we've stopped that from going out at this point in time. So for now, we've been able to hold that off and the solidarity picket is working."

After 20 days the workers ended their picketing when the union secured some severance money for the workers should the company go bankrupt.
