Local Union Members to Unite at EI Rally on June 13
June 10, 2009, 7:18 PM EST
On Saturday June 13th a rally in downtown Toronto will bring together workers and community members to demand changes to EI and other much needed protections. The demonstration is organized by the Canadian Labour Congress, the Toronto and York Region Labour Council and the Good Jobs For All Coalition.
The CAW encourages all local union members across the region to participate in this event. The key issues to be addressed are EI, pensions and strengthening public services.
The number of EI recipients has jumped in the last month alone, according to new Statistics Canada information released May 26. A total of 681,000 Canadians received EI, which has increased by 65,300 since February. The number of beneficiaries has increased by 36.2 percent since October of 2008.
"Improving EI is the most effective way to stimulate the economy at times of crisis," said CLC President Ken Georgetti. "In contrast tax-cuts will not have the same impact."
Starting with a rally at Metro Hall park [King St. Between University and John] the march will work its way toward the Bay Street bank towers and culminate at the Delta Chelsea on Gerrard near Yonge.
