CAW Local 222 members at Americus Logistics in Ajax, Ontario have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a first contract that provides improved wages, shift premiums, sick day provisions and more.
The 134 CAW members voted 88 per cent in support of the new agreement, which provides wage increases of $5.50 to $6 per hour over the life of the agreement, which expires February 1, 2013. In addition, shift premiums are increased for both afternoon and midnight shifts. Lump sum bonuses of $1000 were gained. (Probationary employees receive a $500 bonus).
The new agreement provides substantially reduced benefit co-pays and workers have gained six-days of paid sick leave per year.
Americus Logistics is a warehouse service provider, freight handling and sanitation company.
Acting CAW chairperson Carrie Bailey said the solidarity of the membership was critical to negotiating a strong first agreement. "All the long hours and hard work put in by the bargaining committee and the overwhelming support of the membership made a real difference in these talks," Bailey said. "This is proof that despite the tough economic conditions working people can still make gains if they remain united."
