Workers at Vulcan Containers Ltd. in Petrolia, Ontario have set up a picket line as of May 25, after the company locked out its 21 workers days earlier.
The workers were pressing for a stand pat agreement to replace their previous collective agreement which expired in November 2008. "The workers wanted a hold on pensions for the next couple of years and to continue with our past contract," said CAW Local 456 chairperson Michael Buhlmann.
The company demanded a 40 per cent reduction in hours and a 15 per cent wage cut because of a slowdown in business.
"You can't find someone in Petrolia who doesn't know someone who has worked at the plant," said Buhlmann. "The support of the community definitely increases the workers' morale."
Vulcan Containers Ltd. produces drums for the petroleum industry and has been in business for 55 years.
