GM Workers Reeling After Dealerships Dramatically Slashed

As part of its restructuring plan, General Motors Canada announced on May 20 the closure of approximately 245 dealerships across the country, a move that could cause the loss of an estimated 10,000 jobs. Of these, eight are represented by the CAW. The dealerships are set to close by 2010.
The CAW will be working with these dealerships to minimize the impact of job loss on these workers. The CAW represents workers in 25 GM dealerships across the country.
As CONTACT went to press, the CAW was still negotiating with General Motors in order to reach an agreement that would suit the requirements of the federal and provincial governments. Negotiations began on May 11.
