New collective agreements covering about 2400 workers at DHL have been ratified by CAW members in Local 114 (BC), Local 4050 (Alberta) and Local 4457 (Ontario).
DHL Courier is undertaking a major restructuring in Canada which is being complicated by the current economic global downturn. In response CAW local leadership from these provinces and Manitoba / Saskatchewan came together for intensive bargaining early this year to reach a framework agreement.
The framework agreement covers all CAW certifications in Canada and led to wage increases of 2.5% in each year of the agreement, enhanced severance and adjustment committee funds. In addition the CAW locals have also achieved a common expiry date for all collective agreements. The Local 114, 4050, and 4457 bargaining committees continued bargaining and reached separate agreements with other gains in their respective provinces. The workers ratified these agreements by 95% in BC, 93.4% in Alberta, and 73.8% in Ontario.
"The ratification results reflect membership support for the tremendous work done by the bargaining committees under very difficult circumstances," said Peter Kennedy, assistant to the CAW secretary-treasurer.
