The winner of the 2008 Budd Jimmerfield Award is Wayne Butler, president of CAW Local 20 Marine Workers in Marystown, Newfoundland.

During his 25 years as a trade union activist, Butler served as labour council president and the first president of Local 20, after the group joined the CAW in 1996.

Health and Safety Director Sari Sairanen described Butler as a well respected activist who has spent his career as a health and safety advocate, particularly in bringing public and government attention to the issue of asbestos in the shipbuilding industry. Notably, Wayne submitted a report to the Newfoundland government in 1998 on asbestos in workplaces which resulted in many workers receiving workers' compensation coverage due to asbestos exposure.

The presentation was followed by an address by Michael Jimmerfield, the son of Budd Jimmerfield, who was accompanied by his mother Diane and other close relatives and friends. Jimmerfield spoke about how his father's strong work ethic and sense of justice has shaped his own work and that of a generation of health and safety activists.
