Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation Strike - CAW Local 252
November 27, 2008, 10:50 AM EST
CAW Local 252 members at Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation in Mississauga, Ontario are in a tough strike with their employer over protection of their defined pension plan.
The unit has 55 workers who have been on strike since October 30, 2008
The company is a joint venture between two huge German firms; Voith-Siemens. The Voith group oversees the operations of the hydro power segment and had revenues in 2007 of 4.2 billion euros. In addition, to the Canadian operations Voith-Siemens Hydro Power has operations in 19 other countries.
The workers are defending their defined pension plan, with the corporation demanding that any new employees hired would not participate in the current defined pension plan.
"It is unconscionable that a corporation of this size, which has this type of revenue of 4.2 billion euros would attempt to hold hostage these workers over their pension plan," said Bob Chernecki, assistant to the CAW President. "They need and deserve our full support."
All CAW members in the Greater Toronto Area are encouraged to visit the picket line located at 2185 North Sheridan Way in Mississauga, near Speakman Drive.
Letters of encouragement can be sent to this unit through CAW Local 252 President Abbott Harvey, 1343 Matheson Blvd. E., Mississauga, L4W 1R1.
