       On November 5, 2008, the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour elected a new president from the ranks of the Canadian Auto Workers union. Payne is the second ever woman president of any federation of labour across the country.

       "With thanks to my union and my nominator I accept with honour and privilege."
       "Thank you and do you agree to take the oath of office?"
       "I do."
       "Thank you very much. I would declare sister Payne elected ."

       Lana Payne, communications director for the CAW/FFAW was nominated by her president Earle McCurdy following a demonstration of support at the Federation of Labour's convention in Gander Newfoundland.

       "She's so good we thought that we should let everybody share the benefit of her work as you have in her very good work that she has done as the first vice president. So it is a great privilege for me to nominate for the position of president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour sister Lana Payne."

       After being sworn in along with the new executive, Payne called for unity to organize the unorganized workers in the province and to fight for the betterment of all workers.

       "Together we can ensure that the wealth from our economy gets shared by fighting for better public services, for affordable childcare, and homecare so that the women who work in these jobs are paid a decent wage. Together we can fight for better labour laws so people who want a union can have one without the fear of losing their job."

       Payne challenged the federation membership to mobilize and build a better world.

       "Together we really can make the world a better place. I believe we can do this because I believe in you, in your commitment, your dedication and your activism. I also believe that the federation of labour can be the voice of change. I believe in fact that it is our job to do just that. By building our movement we really do build a better world."
