CAW Members on Strike at Simmons in Brampton
August 19, 2008
Members of CAW Local 513 in Brampton, Ontario hit the picket line on the morning of August 15 after contract talks with their employer Simmons Canada broke down.
The employer is demanding major contract changes that will weaken work standards and lower existing benefits for the150 office and production workers at the facility, located 30 minutes northwest of Toronto. Contract language related to wage rates has not been settled, and remains an outstanding issue in the negotiations.
Local 513 members at the Simmons Canada Brampton facility manufacture bed mattresses for major retailers, including Sleep Country and Sears.
