CAW members Stephan Cronin (Local 88 - Ingersoll) and Steven El-Helou (Local 444 - Windsor) have been selected to participate in the fourteenth session of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Climate Change Conference (COP 14) in Poznan, Poland as members of the Canadian Youth Delegation (CYD).
Cronin and El-Helou are among 28 young Canadians, between the ages of 18 and 26, that will attend the conference, and are the first two young CAW members to attend UN climate change negotiations.
The Poznan conference is considered an important stepping stone in international climate negotiations leading up to Copenhagen in 2009 - the deadline for crafting a new global agreement that will follow the first phase of the Kyoto Protocol.
The CYD has played a critical role in bringing the voice of Canadian youth to international climate change negotiations over the past years, and have been responsible for developing policy platforms, lobbying delegates, engaging media and working with other international youth delegations to affect change in climate change policy.
