CAW Launches Campaign To Oust Tories

Oshawa, Ontario

The CAW has launched a campaign to mobilize members for the upcoming Federal Election, with the goal of booting out the Tories.
Speaking to a public meeting in Oshawa, CAW president Ken Lewenza laid the blame for the job losses at the feet of the Harper Conservative government and stressed the need for a new government.

Ken Lewenza
CAW President

"If we don't have a government that recognizes the manufacturing crisis then we are not going to have an auto industry and that is not a threat folks. We have seen the job losses triple in the last three or four years. We've seen the insecurity of those of us who have a job feeling more and more insecure."

During his speech Lewenza reminded the audience of the numerous plant closings and lay offs that have cost the Oshawa area over 20,000 jobs and placed the auto industry in crisis. He said the Harper government and its Finance Minister Jim Flaherty can and must be defeated.

CAW President

"I say to the members in this room here today, let's vote smart. Let's challenge the status quo. Let's not reward the incompetency of Flaherty and Carrie and others. Where we have an opportunity to influence a different parliament. And let's do everything in our power, everything in our power to make sure that Stephen Harper, the real Stephen Harper doesn't get a majority government. Because if Stephen Harper gets that majority government it will not be the leader of the Conservative party. It will be the leader of the Reform party in partnership with the National Citizens Coalition that will govern this country."

With the October 14th election fast approaching Lewenza challenged all Canadians to get involved.

Ken Lewenza
CAW President

"Our challenge is to get out there and remind our members that Jim Flaherty doesn't deserve an election. People are smart enough to know who has the opportunity to beat him. I couldn't tell you that today. All I know is when I looked at the results today; he won the last election by two thousand votes. So if people think smart, act smart and ask the tough questions, we might put him on the unemployment line."

While urging people to vote strategically, Lewenza endorsed former Local 222 President Mike Shields, the NDP candidate for Oshawa.

CAW President

"In this riding you have got an opportunity to elect a candidate, a workers' candidate that's going to be the voice of people in Oshawa for the first time since Ed Broadbent left this community."
"We have a great opportunity if we use our minds, if we use our experience, if we use our past resolve to this existing government to elect Mike Shields in this community as a member of parliament."

Shields told the audience about one of the victims of Tory economics.

NDP Candidate Oshawa

"He's one of the lucky ones he describes himself because he has found another job. The problem is he has left a $28 an hour, CAW unionized job and now he is working for $14 an hour and he tells me, "Mike quite frankly I can't keep my house. And if you need more than that to motivate you, you're not human. Because his kids are standing in the background and you know we are all workers. It could just as easily be you or I."

Chris Buckley, President of CAW Local 222 echoed Lewenza's call for all Canadians to vote strategically to ensure that the Conservative government is defeated.

Chris Buckley
Pres. CAW Local 222

"Take a good look around your communities and see what's happening, the vacant plants, the empty lots, the line ups at the unemployment insurance line. Ladies and gentlemen do not reward this current government by sending them back to Ottawa. Send them home!"
