Equality - Once and For All!
Equality - Once and for All!
International Women's Day 2008 will mark the start of a year long campaign by the Canadian Labour Congress aimed at improving women's economic equality - Equality - Once and For All!
The campaign involves a series of teach-ins in communities across the country and other creative tactics to address the growing economic gap between men and women. After 25 years of steady progress, the gap between the average wages of men and women has stopped narrowing and is actually growing wider. For women workers of colour, Aboriginal women and women with disabilities, the disparity is much greater.
As part of the campaign, the CLC has developed a series of information leaflets on solutions such as pay equity, minimum wage reform, creating accessible, affordable child care, Employment Insurance reform, improvements to public pensions, closing the (especially large) wage gap for young women and protecting manufacturing jobs for women.
The CLC is encouraging all affiliates to incorporate the materials into campaigns through out the year -March 8, 2008 to 2009.

Save the Federal Gun Registry! Say NO to Bill C-391
The CAW has joined with hundrds of thousands of Canadians aross this country calling on MPs to vote NO for Bill C-391 - a Conservative-lead private members bill intended to dismantle Canada's long gun registry - the existing government program that administers the registration of rifles and shotguns. CAW President Ken Lewenza said:
The decision by a number of NDP MPs to change their vote on the national gun registry is courageous and a recognition that public safety must be paramount...I am hopeful that we can count on progressive MPs to defeat this potentially disastrous Bill.
