CAW Women Take the Stage at the ILO, United Nations
March 1, 2013, 2:10 PM EST
The 57th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW57) will take place at United Nations headquarters in New York from March 4-15, 2013, and once again sisters from the CAW will join with other union women from around the world as part of a delegation of trade union leaders and activists.
UNCSW57 will focus on the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls. In keeping with that theme, the trade union delegation will call on all member states to take the necessary measures to immediately prevent and remedy violence against women and girls.
And for the first time ever - under the leadership of Director of CAW Director of Women's Programs Julie White - the union has been invited by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to participate on a panel at one of the side events. This side event, titled The Impact of Domestic Violence in the Workplace, will be an opportunity for the CAW to showcase the innovative Women's Advocate program - which has seen the creation of over 260 workplace leadership positions to help women in the union access community and workplace supports when facing violence in their lives.
White will share with women leaders and activists from all around the world the experiences, challenges, bargaining strategies and successes of the union.
