Jim Kennedy
CAW Local 27 Recording Secretary

"We in the local unions think that this is really an attack on unions. It is a control on how and where we spend our money. We are going down to visit Susan Truppe and ask her to either vote no on Bill C-377 or at least abstain or not be there for the vote. Our community members have heard us talking about it and have graciously offered their assistance to come with us because they have some concerns also. If the red tape that will be produced by this bill affects the union's ability to donate to our community partners, each and every community is going to hurt.

Our community partners that are here today, they definitely are concerned with the ramifications that may come about from bill." c-377.

What Follows is a phone conversation with Susan Truppe MP London North Centre

Jim Kennedy; "Good morning Susan its Jim Kennedy recording secretary from CAW local 27 how are you this morning?"

Susan Truppe; "Fine how are you?"

Jim Kennedy; "We want to stress to you how important we thing this bill is and has to be voted no on. I am hearing that it is not a whipped vote so backbenchers, I believe, have the ability to listen to their constituents, vote the way their constituents would want them to vote not the way the party wants them to vote and either vote no tomorrow or at least abstain from voting or have an extended lunch enjoy yourself its Christmas time and just don't be there for the vote because as a community activist this bill really really scares me Susan".

Susan Truppe; "Well I certainly appreciate your comments and actually every time I'v spoken to some of the union members they convey very similar thoughts that you have".

Dani Bartlett
CAW Local 27 Chairperson Women's Committee
& My Sister's Place Board Member

""There is a big piece around violence against women too that we have some concerns about. The advocates through the CAW save these women and help these women and there is money involved and this bill will actually make women's names and phone numbers become accessible. Women that we have done all this planning for to become safe and hide them from their abusive partners. There are hugh safety issues".

Jim Kennedy; "Susan its Jim again, could I ask you where you stand on the bill and what you plan to vote as we speak?"

Susan Truppe; "Well I am still weighing it over but I am leaning towards supporting it. But I am taking everything into consideration and I haven't really made my mind up either way".

Jim Kennedy; " We appreciate your time Susan and please consider that no vote not only for us at the local but for our community partners as well, thanks Susan".

Jim speaking to the the attending supporters

"We got absolutely no commitment on Susan's part to vote no or abstain from the vote. I appreciate all our community associates that have come with us today to express your concerns and I am hoping at the end of the day if this bill is passed we don't have our community donations hurt, just in the last year like I said Local 27 CAW members gave to the London community over one hundred and fourteen thousand dollars. I hope that is not what will be hurt because of this bill."

On December 12, 2012 Bill C-377 was passed in the House of Commons by a vote of 147 to 135. Susan Truppe voted with the Harper Government in favour of the bill.
