Pro Choice Rally Against Motion 312
June 25, 2012

London, Ontario
June 25, 2012

Patti Dalton
London District Labour Council, President

"If I had known years ago as a young feminist and activist that I would be defending a woman's right to choose in the year 2012 and that it would be in this climate of virulent attacks on women's rights by the Canadian federal government. It is an outrage, it is unacceptable and it is a glaring attempt to erode the gains made by women which so hard won over many years and came at tremendous cost."

 Julie White
CAW Director of Women's Programs

We are here to do a counter protest against the "Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform" who have been going across the country really to support motion 312 that is in the house right now, the House of Commons, to redefine the issue of abortion, to actually re-criminalize abortion. There are women and men out here who are demonstrating because we won that fight in 1988. We are not going back, the Supreme Court of Canada made a decision that a woman has the right to choose what she does with her own body and that's what this protest is about.

As we leave here tonight we have to think about how we can continue that fight back because it really is important for us to do. The house has risen so that means that all the MPs are on the barbecue circuit now. So I suggest you find out where the conservatives are having their barbecues. Go out and have a hamburger with them and talk to them about the issue of choice.

Kim Yardy
CAW Staff

"I am here because women should have the right to decide what happens to their bodies and that shouldn't be taken away from them by a government. This one was won long ago by women who fought long and hard, some women who died for this right. I think that the government is going to lose this battle and certainly we are going to fight hard on this one because this is crucial, this is basic. A woman's right to decide what happens with her body is basic."

 Chrissy Larmar
CAW Local 524

"This is part of our new government regime and we need to take a stand and let them know that we are not putting up with it. Women have choices, women have rights and we need to come forth and put those rights forward."

Fergo Berto
CAW London Area Director

"It is an absolute shock that in 2012 we are still having these debates about a woman's right to choose. You would think that this was behind us but some people, I guess, want to take you back into the stone age. "

 Megan Walker
London Abused Women's Centre

"It is a fundamental human right for all women to control their own bodies. The message is perfectly clear. It's our body. When we exercise our right to choose you have no fight to interfere."

Irene Mathyssen
MP London-Fanshawe

"This is an American import. This nonsense about taking the rights away from women comes directly from "Focus on the Family" and those right wing evangelicals who somehow or another think that they have a right to come into our country and change twenty four years of freedom that women have earned through their blood, sweat and tears."

Bailey Lamon
Occupy London

"These people need to stop calling themselves pro life, because they are not pro life they are pro oppression."

Jim Kennedy
CAW Local 27

"I think it is very important for us men in this crowd to stand up, speak out and make sure that we are letting everybody know that we are on side to support our sisters and their right for dignity, their right for choice."
