New Global Trade Union Federation Launched
June 21, 2012, 11:45 AM EST
A new global trade union federation representing more than 50 million workers was officially launched in Copenhagen, Denmark on June 19, 2012.
The founding Congress of the IndustriALL Global Union brought together 1,200 trade unionists from 140 countries in manufacturing, mining and energy. The CAW is an affiliate union of IndustriALL.
The congress adopted an action plan with resolutions on a number of key issues facing labour around the globe including resolutions against precarious work, for example.
This new organization brings together affiliates of the former global union federations: the International Metalworkers Federation (IMF), the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM) and the International Textiles Garment and Leather Workers' Federation.
The CAW was an affiliate of the IMF.
