Jonah Schein
MPP for Davenport

"I am so pleased to be here tonight with all of you and I am so glad that you folks have made the time to come out tonight, that people have been active, that you have been going to events, that you have been listening to the voices of the different folks who have been talking about the big issues that we need to talk about in this country. Peggy has all the characteristics of a leader that are important. She listens, she consults, she takes decisive action and she brings people along with her. With that I'd like to welcome Peggy Nash our next NDP leader and the next Prime Minister of Canada."

Peggy Nash
MP for Parkdale High Park

"Thank you so much it is so great to be back in Toronto and you know, we are at an incredible time right now. The last election showed just what is possible for the New Democratic Party. We achieved for the first time offical opposition, uniting progressives right across this country. The values that we united together on, values like, decent jobs where people can support themselves and their families. Values like a sustainable environment not turning our backs on Kyoto. Don't we want to become world leaders when it comes to green technology and a green economy? We want to protect our environment, we want to create value added jobs, we want to create green jobs. We want to make sure that we are reducing inequality not growing inequality. We want to invest in transit right across this country. We want to reduce tuition fees, we want to make sure no senior lives in poverty. We want to make sure that every child has the best start possible. Isn't that what we want to do?"

How will you address the student debt problem?

"What we need to do as government is increase transfers to the provinces targeted specifically, with strings attached to reducing tuition fees. We don't need better access to loans we need lower tuition fees."

What is your strategy for gender equity in politics?

"Our Party is unique in having a requirement of gender representation and balanced representation for all our nomination meetings but we actually have to do the work to make sure that we have great women candidates in winnable ridings and that is a commitment that I'll make to you that I will do that."

How will you fund your programs?

"We absolutely need a progressive tax system. We want to make sure that those at the top are paying their fair share and those companies are paying their fair share so I am committed to that approach, they can afford to pay a little more."

Peggy Nash
MP for Parkdale High Park

"Thank you for caring about our movement. Thank you for being here this evening and I look forward to working with you over the coming years and especially after the next election. Thank you very much."
