CAW Local 1688 in Ottawa has given $5000 in taxi chits toward reducing impaired driving.
The program was launched December 21 and runs until Christmas Day with police officers providing the taxi chits to sober drivers who are stopped at Ottawa RIDE checkpoints.
CAW Local 1688 negotiated the money from their employer Blue Line taxi.
"We are concerned about people who continue to drink and drive," said Local 1688 President Amrik Singh. "As responsible citizens, this initiative is our contribution to eliminating drinking and driving in Ottawa."
Ottawa Police Acting Chief Charles Bordeleau commended the union for the community safety initiative.
"Each taxi chit has the potential to prevent a person who has been drinking from getting behind the wheel. And that makes our roads safer for all," Bordeleau said.
CAW Local 1688 represents approximately 1,500 cab drivers in Ottawa.
